Barbara Guttman - Portfolio 2011-2013: Zchor ( זכור – Heb. remember) - installation

Zchor ( זכור - Heb. remember) is an installation realised on June 19, 2012 on the fasade of the former Sephardic sinagogue in Senta, Serbia. Seven drawings-paintings on paper made by Barbara Guttman are folded and placed inside small holes and cracks on the bricks of the sinogue facade - and then left there to time and destiny.

All drawings-paintings are watercolour, guach and acrylic jelly on paper and are small in size. They were inspired by Hugo A. Roele's book Conversations With The Enemy, which deals with the process of loosing a child and facing and accepting death. Placement of small folded papers inbetween the bricks of the wall is inpired by the Jewish tradion of placing small papers containing prayers and wishes inbetween the stones of the Western Wall in Jerusalem . Memorising is one of the pillars of Jewish(and not only Jewish) tradition which shapes the identity and strenghtens the connection between people.
Public was invited invited to continue this project by placing small drawings and/or prayers at the singogue facade and by doing this to continue the memory of 1500 Jews who were once citizens of Senta.

Zchor (זכור– héber emlékezz) egy installáció, amit 2012. július 19-én állítottunk fel Zentán, a volt szefárd zsinagóga homlokzatán. Barbara Guttman hét rajza-festménye papíron, összehajtogatva lett elhelyezve a zsinagóga falának kis repedéseibe és a téglái közé – hogy aztán ott maradjanak kiszolgáltatva az időnek és a sorsnak.

A rajzok-festmények papírra készültek vízfestékkel, temperával, illetve akrilzselével, kis méretűek. Hugo A. Roelének a gyerek elvesztéséről, a halállal való szembenézésről és annak elfogadásáról szóló, Beszélgetések az ellenféllel című könyve inspirálta. A kis összehajtott papírok elhelyezése a téglák közé a zsidó hagyományból származik, a Siratófal kövei közé imákat vagy kéréseket tartalmazó kis cetliket szoktak tüzni. Az emlékezés a zsidó (és nem csak a zsidó) tradíció egyik fontos oszlopa, ami az identitást, illetve az emberek közötti törödést, kapcsolatokat erősiti. A közönség meg lett hívva, hogy csatlakozzon a projekthez azzal, hogy kis rajzokat helyez el a zsinagóga homlokzatán a falba, így emlékezve az 1500 zsidó emberre, aki valaha a város lakója volt.
